A powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.1 struck near the northern coast of Venezuela on Wednesday, according to the US Geological Survey.
Hazardous tsunami waves are possible for coasts within 300 kilometers (186 miles) of the epicenter, including the coasts of Bonaire, Venezuela, Curacao and Aruba, according to the US Tsunami Warning Centers. It added that there is a tsunami threat to Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
The quake happened 28 kilometers northwest of Montalbán. Some of the country’s largest refineries are located around that area.
