Sherlock Holmes is undoubtedly the most portrayed character in the history of world cinema, and by 1990, seventy actors had portrayed him in more than 200 films. His character, of course, was created years earlier, in 1887 by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Doyle himself later admitted that he created Holmes based on his professor Joseph Bell. Holmes first appeared in The Strand magazine with the story “Study in Red”.
