Dozens of people are dead and many more are still missing after a deadly inferno tore through a massive housing complex in Hong Kong on Wednesday.
It’s the city’s worst disaster in decades. The blaze started at Wang Cheong House, a 32-story residential building and one of eight tower blocks that make up the Wang Fuk Court complex, which was undergoing renovations, according to Derek Armstrong Chan, the Hong Kong fire department’s deputy director of operations. The fire then began spreading to more of the towers.
The buildings were still smoldering more than a day after they started, with rescuers saying extremely high temperatures hampered their ability to reach trapped residents.
The exact cause of the fire is not yet known, but a criminal investigation has been launched.
